Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Jan 6 - Jan 13, 2014

Adrian Foster

Adrian_Foster.jpgAdrian Foster is a young fashion designer from Trinidad and Tobago. In his youngest age, unaware of a fashion industry, he was engaged in imaginative drawing and had collections of paper drawn female dolls. Later on, as a teenager he was introduced to a great friend of his mother – the late Mr. Anthony “Brownie” MacFarlane – who was involved in the beauty and pageant industry. After he impressed Brownie with his sketches, Adrian was mentored for a few years by him. Now deceased, Adrian continued with drawing and he enrolled at the University of Trinidad and Tobago/Caribbean Academy of Fashion Design where he attained a degree in fashion.  It is now a year ago when he started his very own fashion brand in Trinidad (AF). It is safe to say that his passion for life is clearly fashion and art.

Inspiration for his designs can come from anything, he says. However, as he believes and knows that all designers have their design aesthetic including him, he is drawn to particular subjects or era’s in time that depict his brand image or messages that he tries to convey.

His favorite collection, which is his recent collection he did for his final year at UTT/CAFD (the University of Trinidad and Tobago/Caribbean Academy of Fashion Design), is ‘Thesis Resort Collection’. It was his introduction to the fashion industry, he explains.  It was an all-white collection which had so many symbolic meanings, for example for him it meant speaking from an artistic background “Starting off on a clean canvas”.

His designs are ‘ready to wear’ for the young career women. He designs untraditional work wear garments as his main product which has innovation and versatility, enabling his clients to transition from work into an active day lifestyle. Within his collection he also does foundational pieces where he tries to design each and every item of clothing needed for his customer.

As of the New Year 2014, he is planning to do a lot more with his brand and would like to get into retail. His ‘Summer/Resort’ women’s wear collection is planned to be launched in April and hopes to have it in retail by June-August 2014. He is also participating in a competition for young designers like himself to win a retail space in a boutique in Trinidad. The name of the competition is ‘Runway Shift’ and it is hosted by ‘Candice Baccus’ who owns the fashion and accessory retail store ‘Simply Runway’. The winner will get a three month retail space at her store and will also learn about the retail and its logistics and also get hands-on feedback from potential customers.

Here are some beautiful pieces of his collection 'Thesis Resort'

For the years to come he would love to have a fully well manageable fashion brand not just within the Caribbean region but also internationally. His goal is to get into retail; he aims to have a convenient location for a boutique where he can give his customers an ADRIAN FOSTER brand experience!!

Adrian is very talented, we've met during Carifesta XI at the Grand Market in Paramaribo, Suriname and we loved his collection! For updates and more information, just contact us.

We are always interested in and open for suggestions about Caribbean Fashion Designers we might have not yet heard of. So if you are or someone you know is a fashion designer from the Caribbean and would like to get featured here, just send us an email and we will contact you shortly.
