Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Sept 15  - Sept 22, 2014

Beatriz Rodriguez Suarez

Beatriz Rodriguez Suarez, known as Bea, is a fashion designer from Puerto Rico.  As long as she can remember, she has always been designing, creating and believes that fashion is a great opportunity to generate ideas and bring them into reality.  She was nearly 10 years old when she knew that she wanted to be a fashion designer.

As her father taught her at the age of 10 how to draw her own ideas, how to make sketches, and showed her what a fashion designer really does by referring to Oscar de la Renta's creations in a Vogue magazine, she quickly started sketching dresses. A few years later, she was even sketching her friend's junior-prom dresses.

Bea gets inspired by architecture, nature, and mostly by feelings.  She continues that she likes the challenge of being inspired by a concept and then having that same concept taken shape through the clothing. She designs ready-to-wear clothing and swimwear. Her clothing is very sleek, feminine, elegant and they do not only look very easy to wear but also wearable for different occasions from sophisticated to a more casual (party) event. Bea also creates custom-made designs for individual clients for instance for beauty pageants’ contestants.

She caters for young women between 25 and 35 years old mostly, but for the very diverse designer that she is, she is very flexible and open when it comes to designing for different kind of people.  She designed teen pageants’ dresses, male musician's shirts, and even designed a swimwear piece for a 95 year old professional swimmer.

Bea just showcased her beautiful and elegant Spring/Summer 2015 collection during New York Fashion Week  2014 at the Fashion Gallery showcase, which was well received by the audience. Furthermore, she is planning to showcase this new collection in a hip restaurant called Rosa Mexicano in Puerto Rico for which she has been invited. Local press and buyers will attend this small cocktail event  and they will be introduced to her new collection, enabling them to buy and talk about the collection.  In October she will also participate in our, ‘Dy Muñeca the Caribbean Fashion Spot’, fashion show in Barcelona which is organized to increase brand awareness for Caribbean fashion designers.  After that,  she will be heading once again to New York to present the Fall/Winter 2016 collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2015.
