Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Jun 2 - Jun 9, 2014

Heather Jones

Heather Jones is a fashion designer from Trinidad and Tobago, the owner of HJD Ltd . She has been designing for over 30 years and studied garment construction with Fitz Blackman. She designs crafted ladies fashion, innovative office/uniform lines, and wedding gowns.

Her designs are ´prêt-a-porter´ including one-of-a-kind dresses, and she wants to make women feel good about themselves, to empower and inspire them. Heather also designs wedding gowns, and she strives to make every woman feel and look, like a princess on the day of her wedding. All her clothing, patterns are designed and developed in-house in Trinidad. She also does interior decorating, Christmas trees, and wreaths and decor.

Oasap Limited

She says that she finds inspiration from the rhythm, passion, and movement of her home island and the Caribbean. Her designs are inspired by nature; like waterfalls, and the rich flora of orchids and hibiscuses; and the tropical Caribbean. Heather has an eye for detail and she uses hand painting, batik and tie-dye to create beautiful, stylish, fresh and clean designs. Her creations are colorful and enable you to imagine warm tropical nights, cool sensuous days, and deliciously soothing waters, according to her.

She won the ‘National Awards of Trinidad and Tobago Chaconia Gold Medal’ in 2009 for her contribution to fashion ‘ International Prêt a Porter Style Award’ at ‘Fashion Week of the Americas 2002’, which was held in South Beach Miami. In 2005, she also won the ‘Woman of Great Esteem Award’ from New York's Woman of Great Esteem Foundation, and in 2008 she won the ‘Best Trinidad & Tobago Designer Award’.

Here are some beautiful designs that we selected created by 'Heather Jones' :

More

Heather Jones designs are also available on the US market, having buyers from more than 30 US-based specialty and department stores. Now Heather Jones wants to introduce her collections to the European, MEA and Asian markets. In Europe she started by attending the MeMy Mode Show in Paris in September-October 2012, and this year she was in Paris again showcasing her designs at Labo Ethnik Fashion and Lifestyle on May 22-25, 2014 for the first time. At this latter event, we got the chance to personally meet Heather Jones, who is very inspiring and humble. She is a wonderful woman and truly talented.

At this event in Paris she showcased her last collection which is inspired by ´romance´ she added, and this was her fifth time in Paris. She finds Milan her favorite city in Europe, however she prefers the Caribbean, her home Trinidad, and she continues that there is no place like home.

Furthermore, in 2013 she attended ‘The Gallery’ in Berlin, ‘Japan International Fashion Week’, ‘Miami Fashion Week’, ‘Unconventional Wedding District’ in Milan, and ‘Mediterranean Fashion Dreams‘ in Italy. Her previous collection was inspired by the ´colors of the ocean´ which she launched in Elba, Italy at Mediterranean Fashion Dreams .

Her next stop will be Milan and then Japan to attend fashion events and also to visit a boutique in Japan called ´Little New York´ that will be selling her clothing. In the future she would like to have (a) store(s) in Europe, Japan and Honk Kong as well.
