Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Dec 23 - 30, 2013

Isaiah Luther

Isaiah Luther is a 22-year-old designer living in Guyana and has always been interested in fashion.  He grew up with fashion as his father was a skilled tailor and as a child he used to make clothes for his sisters’ dolls from the pieces of scrap cloth left over from his father’s work . You can say that he inherited the craft from his father.

During the years he developed his own style and skills as a designer. He also lived in Trinidad for a couple of years whereby his designs have both Guyanese and Trinidadian culture influences. The style of his mother which he  describes as a daring sophisticated woman, also impacted his sense of style. But there’s more!!! He is not only a talented fashion designer but also a passionate dancer!!!

He developed his dancing skills and has been dancing for the past ten years, being currently the artistic director at ‘Let's Dance’ dance studio. Teaching dance, plays a big part in his life as it empowers him to explore deep within reaching for soulfulness and spiritual talent. The combination of the different life events concerning fashion and dancing enables him to get inspiration for his designs.

He recently created his first collection which premiered on December 15th 2013  at the 'Break the Runway'  showcase, hosted by designer ‘Ryan Berkeley’ in collaboration with ‘Let's Dance’ studio. The collection he designed consists of a female collection ‘Dare to be Woman’  and a male collection ‘Funk me’. The female collection  'Dare to be Woman' is his favorite so far, where he captured everything  he envisions a woman to be. The collection is a mixture of soft and hard fabrics which he believes accentuates a woman's physique. His designs encompasses elegance, class and sensuality. He describes his designs as clothing that is appealing for work, dinner or ostentatious events, which is practical and stylish. And we agree!!!! His clothing is for a mature sophisticated set that is daring and wants to stand out amongst the crowd.

Here are some of our favorite pieces of his first collection:

‘Funk me’

If you want to see more of Isaiah Luther and his designs you’re welcome to visit the fashion show  ‘MYSTIQ L'OVERTURE’ which will take place on Sunday December 29th 2013 at Grand Coastal Inn in Guyana. He will be joined by Derek Moore and Roger Gary .

More

This will be his last fashion event in 2013, and for 2014 and the following years he intends to participate in more events to promote his work so he can become recognized not just in Guyana but also internationally. He’s aiming to participate in Guyana Fashion Weekend, Suriname Fashion Week, Caribbean Fashion Weekend, and even Milan Fashion Week in the future. He set to be an acclaimed and accomplished designer, with his own workshop where he can cut, sew and design his own garments. His goal is to becoming known as one of Guyana’s leading designers.

We are always interested in and open for suggestions about Caribbean Fashion Designers we might have not yet heard of. So if you are or someone you know is a fashion designer from the Caribbean and would like to get featured here, just send us an email and we will contact you shortly.
