Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Aug 18 -Aug 25, 2014

Jacqueline Cohen

Jacqueline Cohen is a fashion designer from Jamaica and the owner of the clothing line Mutamba which she founded in 2001. Mutamba is a prêt-à-porter line that features casual, ethnic designs. The clothing line is known for lightness of fabric, soft and natural fibers like cotton, linen and silk and authentic handcrafted embellishments using natural paints and dyes, including hand-painted prints and patterns.

Mutamba means as following: Muta derives from the name Mutabaruka which means life partner and Amba refers to the color of the skin.

Oasap Limited

Jacqueline also known as Jackie loves nature; and perfectly sensible that her designs are mostly inspired by nature, humanity, world cultures and simplicity. The clothing can best be described as casual, sensual, elegant, modern with an ethnic touch (usually Indian and African fabrics and patterns) . Her signature look is the use of soft and all-natural fabrics with ethnic influences, without using buttons and zippers. She believes that clothing should feel naturally when putting it on and should fit anyone without squeezing oneself into a limited space when dressing.

Before becoming a fashion designer, she was a flight attendant for Belize Airways and while travelling around the world she was collecting fabrics, natural and cultural elements from various exotic countries. This passion together with that of creating own designs, triggered her to launch her own clothing brand after the airline closed down.

Here are some designs created by 'Jacqueline Cohen' :

Since the launch in 2001, Mutamba was featured in many local and international fashion events, including Martinique, St. Maarten, St. Vincent, Guadeloupe, the USA and Europe. In her home country Jamaica, she consistently participate at the annual ‘Caribbean Fashion Week and her designs are also used in the ‘Pulse Caribbean Faces of Summer Model Search’ fashion show. During Caribbean Fashion Week 2014 she showcased her latest collection which was very impressive using solid black, bright colors that made her designs look very elegant, casual  and sexy at the same time.

Furthermore, her designs were worn by internationally known celebrities Erykah Badu and Maxi Priest. Hopefully her pieces can soon be purchased also at Dy Muñeca the Caribbean Fashion Spot.
