Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Jul 7 -Jul 14, 2014

Lyn Bristol

Lyn Bristol is a fashion designer from Castries, St Lucia and her clothing brand is called LBM designs.  She designs resort wear clothing, using natural fabrics and creating one-of-a-kind designs. Her signature look is her use of fabric paints and dyes when creating unique pieces. Hence, her designs are simple silhouettes, beautiful one-of-a-kind hand painted designs.

Lyn is a self-taught designer and she describes herself as a visual artist, mostly in abstract paintings. She has also done work in costume design and production for St Lucia’s carnival and theatre productions.  She says that she has always been passionate about the arts in almost all of its forms from which she got to know a diverse section of artists; both performing, visual, textile and craft from her experience in managing a special event planning company of which she was a co-director/partner. Furthermore, Lyn also assisted at St Lucia’s Cultural Development Foundation’s annual visual art exhibitions.

In 2010, Lyn joined a textile co-operative and since then she started with fashion design and in 2011 she really got down to business she added.  She gets inspired by everything around her, even by sounds sometimes (e.g. certain musical notes).  She said that she sometimes day-dreams of design silhouettes, or designs on fabrics which she put on paper in her, which she calls, special “art and design” notebook.  Furthermore, she also gets her inspiration from certain fabrics, and colors.

Her favourite collection was from the first St Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival’s “Hot Couture” held in 2013.  The reason is because this was her really, absolutely first big break in the fashion scene.  During this show, she got introduced to the fashion world and everyone saw HER and her work!!  As a visual artist she chose for this collection, to hand paint fabrics and to turn them into garments – simple, easy to wear, but flattering garments that everyone can wear.  Before that, she mostly did sarongs and scarves, which were also hand painted.

More

She designs for stylish, sophisticated women and men, with the Caribbean region as her most important market. Currently, she is planning on attending the “Yoles Fashion Week” to be held in Martinique from July 26 to 27; then on to Suriname for “Suriname Fashion Week 2014” which will be held in Paramaribo from October 1 to 5.  She also intends to participate in an event to be held in St Lucia in late October.

Her real passion in the fashion industry is to be either a fashion blogger (for the Caribbean), or to become a fashion stylist (in the entertainment industry).  In the future, she cannot imagine being a designer for too long.  She would prefer to educate or set trends within the Caribbean, since she believes that we, the Caribbean, have to get known out there, internationally.
