Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week May 12 - May 19, 2014

Queen Esther

Queen_Esther.jpg

Esther Joseph, known as Queen Esther,  is a fashion designer from St. Lucia, she is the creative mastermind behind ‘Kuumba Designs’ which offers both women and men's ready to wear and couture designs, and also accessories.  She created ‘Kuumba Designs’ to conceptualize the essence of life, expressing happiness, joy, love, laughter between men and women, and achievements. She wanted to design clothing that is sustainable, ecological with Caribbean influences. One can see in her designs her love for humanity which is shown in the awareness of the ecological usage of textiles.

She has been sewing for over forty years; started when she was just nine years old. From the age of nine to fourteen she was mentored by St. Lucian designer ‘Regina Edwards’.  As a young teenage girl she owned her first sewing machine and started her own business.  When she was just seventeen she decided to leave St. Lucia for New York,  to pursue a career in fashion.  At age twenty she created customized clothing for a vast range of clients including models, reggae artists, as well as a culturally diverse clientele, business firms, lawyers , magistrates, bankers uniforms, bridal wear and gowns for beauty pageants. Currently, back in the Caribbean living on the island of St. Lucia where she still maintains her standards to the international market.

Oasap Limited

She is inspired by the Caribbean and also gets inspiration from her extensive travels and interaction with people, art, fruits and flowers. Furthermore, she uses her personal and professional experience  as well as inspiration when working on a collection where she continually experiments with new techniques like incorporating hand crafted trimmings, in order to be different  with  her approach to fashion.  According to her, she takes pride in finishing her products to the highest quality.

Her designs are handcrafted in harmony with the environment and designed for the world, as she states. ‘Kuumba Designs’ clothing and accessories are exclusive, functional,  creative, very stylish and fabricated in a variety of materials. Queen Esther uses hand crafted crochet incorporated into cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo, silk  satin, chamois, taffeta, chiffon, organza ,Chantilly lace, Sisal straw,  Dupion and recyclable eco-materials.

She showcased  amongst others at Caribbean Gift and Craft Show;  Cafe 2011 (Caribbean American Fashion Exchange) in Georgia, Atlanta; Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica; the Islands of the World Fashion Week in 2008 in the Bahamas where she won the ‘Sustainable Eco-Fashion Award'; at the second annual Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago 2009 at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain, Trinidad; and she was also featured at the first Caribbean International Fashion Week (CIFW) which took place on June 8th 2011 in New York City at the Roseland Ballroom. She also showcased during Carifesta XI in Suriname in 2013, at the Grand Market and Grandeur Fasshion Show, and that's how we met Queen Esther and fell in love with her beautiful and stylish designs (big fans).
