Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Mar 10 - Mar 17, 2014

Rebecca Stirm

REBECCA-STIRM.jpg

Rebecca Stirm is a 21-year-old fashion designer, born and raised in Belmopan, Belize.  She is a self-taught clothing designer;  she was drawing, sketching designs and sewing clothing from the age of 11. She received a sewing machine on sale at ‘Courts’ from her parents and as a teenager she started cutting apart old clothes to see how they were made, and cut and re-shaped old patterns to make them her size. By trial and error while sewing for herself she learnt to make patterns and sew them together.

This was her hobby until 2009, when she decided to create, on advice of a friend, her first collection of day- and cocktail dresses in order to showcase them at her first fashion show ‘The August Fashion Show’. It was definitely a good decision as she received her first orders for dresses from her collection.  Before that, she got the opportunity to show a few dresses in a charity fashion show (Help for Haiti) in early 2010 which inspired her to create her first collection and to execute her first fashion show ‘The August Fashion Show’.  The orders she received after ‘The August Fashion Show’ made her believe that this hobby could be a job, making her hobby into a job eventually.

From that moment on she was focusing on designing, and created a second collection before she relocated to Canada in 2011 to study ’Fashion Design and Marketing’ at the Art Institute of Vancouver for a semester. After her return to Belize, being just 18, she got the opportunity to compete in a ‘Jamaican designer reality TV-show’ called Mission Catwalk’ – Season 2 against 19 other Caribbean designers (from Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago) , for a chance to ‘Rule the Catwalk’, winning a spot to showcase a collection at London Fashion Week 2012. Furthermore the winner received, a $500,000 Cash prize,  industrial sewing equipment, a contract to sell their designs at SOHO Boutique, a six-page fashion editorial in Ocean Style Magazine, a scholarship to pursue fashion program at London College of Fashion, and a scholarship to study tailoring at Savile Row Academy in London. She did not win the title, but won the most challenges (4 out of 12) and ended up as second runner-up.

Thanks to Mission Catwalk she became widely known in Belize, became a household name in Belize, and got some great international exposure. Her clothing was viewed by thousands during the Jamaican Fashion Week where various models were wearing her designs, her clothing was also viewed at two top international pageants namely the ‘Miss World pageant’ in China where Miss World Belize Chantae Chanice Guy was wearing a couple of dresses during separate events at the pageant, and the ‘Costa Maya pageant’ where Rebecca held a photo shoot with two of the delegates, Miss El Salvador and Miss Panama at one of the suites of the San Ignacio Resort Hotel where they were modeling one of Rebecca's beautiful evening gowns.

More

Rebecca is  a women's-wear designer , and she describes her designs as simple with clean line, designing both ‘collections’ (ready to wear) and ‘custom pieces’ for clients .
