Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Febr 3 - Febr 10, 2014

Ricky Bhowram

Ricky_Bhowram.jpg

Ricky Bhowram is a young fashion designer from Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago. Growing up as a child he was fully unaware of the fashion world and its business.  Though, he always use to draw countless sketches of dresses and article of clothing. His fondest memories of fashion as a child was being able to design his sisters’ doll Christmas outfit at approximately 8 years old, he drew it and his mom made it. As he was getting older he got inspired while looking at ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ and got totally fascinated by the entire industry.  A couple of years later while he was doing his law degree, he longed to do something more creative with his life. Unknowingly to his parents , he dropped out of law school, and enrolled at the Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design. Four years later,  after many hardships and struggles, he stood proud as one of the top 5 student designers with a BA in Fashion and Design (hons.)

He has been designing for just about two years and has yet to formally launch his company ‘Bhowram Atelier’ to which people can look forward in 2014.  His life’s passion, concerning his work, is to build an all encompassing brand that the world would be able to associate with sophistication, quality, design and luxury. Besides being passionate about his work he also loves to experience new cultures, do charity work, and also wants to help establish a fashion industry in Trinidad and the Caribbean as one does not formally exist. He would also love to get into becoming a mentor or organizing some sought of a mission to reach out to young individuals who face struggles as he once did.

As a designer he is inspired by a lot of things; political movements in the world, war, love, music, art and so on. However, as great designers always have a story to tell and their collection always do the speaking for them, he tries to always tell a story with his collections based on the particular inspiration and theme. He tends to be a little more on the dark side with his work as controversial issues are explored and investigated in the stitches and seams. His personal aesthetic can be described as a dark whimsical twist exploring volume and innovation.

As an upcoming fashion designer his favorite collection would have to be his thesis graduation collection out of UTT, “Enlightenment”. Close to about a year was invested in developing this 6 piece collection. The collection “Enlightenment” investigated a futuristic theme where one would figure out how to integrate technology into one’s daily life and how technology can coexist with nature in harmony.  Technology like LED lighting was incorporated into some of the garments and a lot of inspiration from robots and technology.

His designs, as he prefers to be described, are luxury high end and luxury ready to wear, and the seasons he cater for is Spring/ Summer and Fall/Winter. His work is very exclusive and usually not many pieces are made of a particular design. Most of the statement luxury high end pieces that he designs would be one of a kind.

He designs for the professional working woman, the kind that dominates when she steps into a room and her fashion gives her the confidence to do so. This woman knows about style and keeps up with all of the latest trends from New York to London, definitely a trend setter and a strong, passionate, empowered woman.

Here are some beautiful 'Bhowram Atelier' designs:

This year he will officially launch his company ‘Bhowram Atelier’.  In the very near future he sees himself and the Bhowram Atelier brand at the forefront of fashion in the Caribbean to locals and non-locals alike. He would like to see the cottage industry grow into a million or even billion dollar industry for the Caribbean and would also like to be an ambassador to the major fashion capitals of the world.

He believes that currently the industry remains stagnant and that opportunities are always given to “titans” of fashion and that the same should be able to afford their own marketing and opportunities taking into account the amount of years they are in business.

Furthermore, he believes that more needs to be done to help the young aspiring talent before a brain drain is suffered or even a young person’s dream gets killed. Investors need to jump on board and assist in the market since there is great opportunity for money to be made and to promote Caribbean fashion.
