Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week May 26 - Jun 2, 2014

Sophia Clarke

Sophia_Clarke.jpg

Sophia Clarke is a fashion designer from Barbados and the owner/ CEO of Emmaline design. She studied ‘Fashion Design and Merchandising’ at Houston Community College, she moved to Houston Texas, USA  more than nineteen years ago, to pursue a fashion career. She grew up sewing clothes for her Barbie dolls. Now she is attending art shows, designing and exposing her clothing line ‘Emmaline’ wherever she can.  Sophia was always into fashion, as a little girl she was encouraged by her great-grandmother ‘Emmaline Stephenson’ to play dress up who also taught her to sew, and these sparked her love for fashion.  Sophia’s  interest in art was triggered by her mother ‘Paulette Harewood’ who introduced her to art, by drawing sketches in Sophia’s art books and taking her to see art exhibitions.

It’s pretty clear that her brand ‘Emmaline’ is named after her beloved great-grandmother. She caters to women who seek beauty, functionality and longevity in fashion. Her collection features dresses in natural fibers infused with a blend of Caribbean characteristics and Texan colors. One can easily distinguish her designs from others as Sophia’s signature look is clean lines and her unique tie dye techniques.

In 2011 she was one of the featured designers of ‘Fashion Salon and Silent Auction’ which was held in Atlanta at ‘The Clubhouse at Paces’ in Buckhead, organized by JLC Productions LLC. This is a fashion event with a Caribbean flair  featuring designers from St. Lucia, Barbados, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Here are some beautiful designs that we selected created by 'Sophia Clarke' :

More

Sophia Clarke was also the first accepted Barbadian designer by Caribbean American Fashion Exchange - CAFE 2011  to participate in the ‘Caribbean Fashion Trade Mission’ (CFTM). This would be the first event of the  2011 program that included fashion presentations and seminars for the regional design community, and was held on May 26 – 29 2011 in Trinidad and Tobago. At this fashion event, Sophia along with other Caribbean fashion designers (Dominican Republic, Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad & Tobago) got the chance to meet with buyers, retailers, and press to display their designs and accessories.  In 2012 she was invited to participate in ‘Dallas Fashion Week’, and in 2013 she was invited to participate in the University of Houston Chapter NAACP annual fashion show. Furthermore, she has been showcasing at many charity Fashion Shows. Sophia works also as a freelance stylist and a Visual Merchandiser for Macy's.
