Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week May 5 - May 12, 2014

Tamiko Browne

Tamiko Browne is an up-and-coming eco-swim & resort wear designer from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, originally from the United States. In 2008, at the age of 33 she created  the swimwear label ‘TAMI B Designs’ which is an international luxury eco-swimwear brand and that without any formal training. She just wanted a swimwear line that bridges the gap for women who are inspired by the past and who re-invent the future while being environmentally conscious.

Tamiko decided to create an own swimwear line with pieces that look good while helping the environment. She wanted to design pieces where an exquisite combination of sustainable and eco-friendly materials are used which are hand embellished.  This makes her line ‘TAMI B Designs’  a luxurious cutting-edge swimwear product made with top quality eco-friendly materials.

Oasap Limited

She debuted in the fashion world in that same year (2008), as she was invited to showcase at the inaugural ‘Islands of the World Fashion Week’ in the Bahamas where she won top prizes in two of the five categories namely the ‘2008 Next Generation Designer Award’, and as winner for the ‘Culture & Fashion Award’ for her piece “Garifuna Goddess”; which was a swimsuit woven from straw/copia. In 2009, Tamiko was also a ‘Caribbean Fashion Award’ nominee and in September of that same year she showcased her eco-swimsuits at New York Fashion Week. Her Eco-Swimwear Spring/Summer 2010 collection “Queen of the Nile”  was shown on the catwalk of Nolcha Fashion Week at Manhattan’s Bohemian National Hall. In 2011, she was one of the featured designers at the second annual ‘Caribbean Extravaganza’ fashion show that took place in New York.

Tamiko gets inspired amongst others by the nature of St. Vincent’s north coast, ‘La Soufriere’ St. Vincent’s active volcano, the surrounding black-and-white-sand beaches, the waters of the Caribbean, picturesque sunsets, the movement of Island life coupled with the spirituality of its culture. She uses a mixture of textures and colors, different fabrics,  botanical influences, wild prints combined with fine detailing and textural finishes , and all these give her designs an exotic, exclusive, sexy, flirty, glamorous, and sophisticated look.

Here are some beautiful designs that we selected created by 'Tamiko Browne' :

Her style features the contrast of warm and cool tones against one’s skin, as she claims. All fabrics are recycled, eco-friendly and sustainable. Her label is committed to providing trade-free, sustainable and eco-friendly garments while using modern technology to turn rare and revered old-world fibers into new and appealing high-end fabrics. These make it possible to produce luxurious, sensuous swim & resort wear in ways that are non-toxic, ethical and sustainable.

She designs for the self-confident woman, who is elegant, sophisticated, natural, timeless, fashion forward, trendsetting and who always requires top of the line apparel for her jet-setting life around the world when socializing, dining or at an exclusive beach party (in the Hamptons, at an exotic island resort, on a yacht in Marbella etc.). Her innovative approach to the modern swimwear has captured the attention of women who are looking for that island vibe. She has expanded the collection by adding gorgeous cover-ups, caftans and dresses which create the ultimate tropical wardrobe.
