Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Apr 7 - Apr 14, 2014

Toni Thorne

ToniT.jpg

Toni Thorne is a young fashion designer from Barbados. She is an award-winning young entrepreneur & Barbados National Youth Awardee. She has been involved in many businesses (also in arts like dance) representing Barbados and her first business was BoUiK by Toni Thorne, which is her clothing line.

BoUiK was featured in many major regional and fashion publication as well as international publications like the London Times, I-D Magazine, Sister to Sister Magazine. BoUiK has basically been showcased in every major fashion show across the Caribbean region, like Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW) and Novafest Fashion Show.  BoUiK by Toni Thorne clothing is fresh, colorful, modern, innovative and very daring. BoUiK by Toni Thorne specializes in demi-couture, T-shirts, swimwear and funky accessories, and it caters to the self-confident fashionista.  Toni produces one collection per year as she perceives that due to the hot weather all-year-long in the Caribbean it is both cost-effective and rational to just produce one collection per year.

The clothing line was initially a business plan in a national business competition hosted by Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC), where she was representing the University of the West Indies.  She won $ 500 and with that money she established her clothing line. When she was 22 years old, Toni was the first to receive ‘Caribbean Fashion Awards’ and ‘Young Upcoming Designer of the Year’ Award.

Her ultimate goal is to become a major player in the Caribbean fashion market and to transform BoUiK from a clothing line to a fashion company supplying boutiques internationally too, and that same fashion company will use fashion as a medium to positively change and enhance lives and experiences across the globe. Her collection is available for purchase on the website of BoUiK by Toni Thorne.

More

The fashion designer  who prefers to refer to herself as a young entrepreneur than as a designer, is a graduate of the University of the West Indies with a BSc. Economics and Accounting (Hons),  and also of the University of London with a Bachelor of Laws. Not only being successful with her clothing line but also being the first person of Caribbean descent to sit on the Global Youth Leader’s Summit in Prague, Budapest and Vienna in 2005.  Furthermore,  she is also the Creative Director for ‘Island Fusion Foreday Morning Band’, Managing Director of ‘Settlers West Coast Experience’, and publisher of ‘Pompasette Magazine’. She is also the owner of ‘Thorne Publishing and Productions’ which has been drafted by three regional broadcasting networks to create entertaining and engaging television content for the Caribbean's 16-35 age group (with her productions  being seen on approximately 50 television stations).

Toni is also very active in local and regional projects such as ‘Martha's Smile which she founded in 2009 (funded by BoUiK), a one-year charity program catered to HIV-infected children in Jamaica.  This program provided dance and music lessons to the children of Martha’s Home (which was burnt to the ground).

Now Toni is working on World Bank funded initiatives in the areas of youth development and employment in Barbados; another television show which will use popular culture to address sexual health.
