Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Jan 20 - Jan 27, 2014

Warda Marica

Warda Marica is a talented jewelry designer born and raised in Paramaribo, Suriname. She lived in Suriname until 1995 and then moved to Belgium. In Belgium she got in touch with her creative side as she took the course of ‘Methalsmith-Jeweller’ in Antwerp, Belgium.

Her passion in life, as she states, has always been “Life itself - Be happy with YOU”. It is therefore that Warda designs her jewelry for people that not only love life but also are happy with themselves and try to achieve a few goals they have set.

Warda started designing about 10 years ago, it was then merely curiosity for beading techniques. Then she started experimenting with precious metals like silver and copper, that is when she attended the course ‘Methalsmith-Jeweller’. From that moment she combined her forged silver pieces with her beading techniques. Her designs are characteristically made of a big centerpiece in silver, finished with gemstones, stamps, plastic bags, textiles and whatever material she finds suitable.

Like most designers she gets inspiration at any moment, and besides she also has her sketchbook with her all the time as according to her a collection is often born suddenly and not often planned.

The ‘Stamp-on-it’ collection took form when she was living in Belgium and one day when she was cleaning up her attic she stumbled upon her old collections of stamps. She wanted to create a nostalgic feeling with these pieces, a feeling of going around the globe. She then used as what she considered the correct “part” of each stamp, depending on the story she wanted to tell.

The ‘Palulu’ collection was also designed while in Belgium and there she was asked to do an exposition with a Surinamese theme. The palulu was her perception of  what represented ‘Suriname’ to her at that time.

As there is a lot of waste material, she looked around to see what she could give a new life and could reuse. That is how the ‘ReCycle Art’ collection (2014) was born. In her first collection of 2014, she is using plastic bags that she turns into beads.

Up to now she finds her favorite collection the ‘Palulu’ collection. Although it is a collection of 2007, she is still able to find new ideas for this collection, and it keeps inspiring her as its forms and shapes give her endless possibilities and never bore her.

Warda Marica jewelry is ‘wearable’ and for all times. She designs for everybody, people of all ages, with different styles, from different parts of the society, just for all men and women that want to have a piece of Warda Marica Jewelry. In her own words, her target group is simply YOU.

When a customer buys a piece, especially a necklace she also gives a little advice on how to combine with which neckline and at which occasions it can be worn. If you make the right choices and combinations in clothing, one necklace can be worn casually as well as for chic occasions. That is the reason why she loves what she does, because she does not only sell jewelry but also sell styling tips to those that are purchasing.

Here are some beautiful pieces of 'Warda Marica Jewelry'
