Caribbean Fashion Designer of the Week Apr 21 - Apr 28, 2014

Wilma Stomp

logoWilma Stomp is a fashion designer from Suriname and the owner of ‘Wilma’s Original’. She is a graduate designer of the fashion school ‘Lagre’ in Amsterdam. Before starting her own label in Suriname ‘Wilma’s Original’, she worked for Dutch companies in the area of design, product management and production.

Wilma states that she finds her inspiration from her multi-cultural and multi-ethnic country called Suriname, which we can see in basically all her designs being based on the country’s  traditional clothing. We find her designs beautiful, stylish, casually chic and wearable, and can also easily be worn in any part of the world. The multi-cultural influences in her designs and her use of colors, shapes and fabrics make her clothing very trendy and appealing to an international audience.

She is very talented and creative, and her signature look is traditional influences in modern fashion clothing with her jumpsuits as a great example. Wilma often creates jumpsuits which are essential in modern fashion and she gives a Caribbean twist to it, using multi-cultural features. Besides creating collections, Wilma also designs custom-made outfits for a lot of private female clients  and corporate outfits for companies such as the Royal Torarica Hotel, the Courtyard Marriott Hotel and the clothing of the flight attendants of Surinam Airways SLM.

Wilma is also the winner of several awards, in 2008 she was awarded as ‘Best designer of the Caribbean’ at the 15th Caribbean Gift & Craft Show in Barbados ,and in 2010 she won the ‘Award of Excellence in Fashion’ in Paramaribo. Wilma participated in several fashion events in Suriname and across the Caribbean and South American region. In 2009 she showed her beautiful designs on the runway of Ecuador Fashion Week 2009/ Yanbal Fashion Week, September 26 – October 1 in Guayaquil.

She also showcased during Caribbean Fashion Week 2012 which was held at the National Indoor Sports Centre, St Andrew Jamaica from June 7th-11th; an annual Caribbean fashion event since 2001 that highlights the 'best of the best' in Caribbean fashion. She really impressed the audience with her collection which was based on the traditional clothing of the different cultures in Suriname using not only silk, gold- and silver colored fabrics but also African print and quadrille pattern (Pangi).

More

During Carifesta XI, in 2013 in Suriname, Wilma also played an important role in the fashion division of this big Caribbean festival. She was head coordinator of the ‘Grandeur Fashion Show’, which was held in Royal Torarica Hotel on August 19.  The Grandeur Fashion Show featured designers from Belize, Haïti, Guyana, Suriname, Cuba, Trinidad & Tobago and St.Lucia, such as Sonia Noel, Joris Hendrik, Phelicia Dell. That is where we had the pleasure of briefly meeting Wilma Stomp in person for our coverage of this fashion show. In the future we hope to meet her again having a longer more-in-depth conversation and see more from her on an international level.

Though she already has a household name in Suriname and the Caribbean, her goal is to get more recognition and to become more known for her style and to put Suriname on the world map as a fashion destination.
